Online Lessons

I will regularly add new lessons, so it’s worth checking it out, let’s say, every two month. The lessons are made for download, but you need the adobe reader for printing the pdfs.

The first groove presented is, what I play on my clinics to the song „Naye“, from the fantastic Richard Bona-Recording Toto, Bona, Lokua. Basically, it is a modern interpretation of the traditional mandingue rhythm Soli Rapide.

The second one is a transcription of the groove, I normally start my clinics with. It's an old rhythm from Mali and it’s called "Fourasi".

A young drummer from Augsburg, Norbert, asked me, to include a vodou-groove on my website. Here it is. The traditional patterns of the Yanvalou-rhythm I have taken from the book Vodou Drumset from James Armstrong and Travis Knepper. What follows, is my own interpretation of it.

In my workshop and clinics, I emphasize the importance of playing to original African music.

Now I give you some records, which are very useful for that purpose, because there is no drum set being used. I love to play to this recordings.

Richard Bona (Kamerun) Toto, Bona, Lokua
Farafina (Burkina Faso)

Fasou Denou
Kanou
Bolomakoté
Maré Sanogo (Mali) Fourasi
Guem & Zaka Giants of Percussion
Fatala (Guinea) Gongoma Times

Check out also recordings from the following artists:

Sally Nyolo (Kamerun)
Mamady Keita (Guinea)
Bidinte (Guinea Bissau)
Bonga (Angola)
Sam Mangwana (Zaire)

For jazz drumming, there are also a lot of classical recordings with no drummer, that swing like hell and which is real fun to play with. Look at the discography from Oscar Peterson, Nat King Cole, Chet Baker, Monty Alexander, Phil Catherine, Red Norvo, etc. !
